Suggestions for Partents Using the C.A.P.
- The C.A.P. should be only fitted by a licensed orthotist or physician.
- Success of the helmet depends on consistent wearing. The best and most rapid results are obtained when children are fitted for the C.A.P. at four to seven months of age. Older children require more time to correct and may not correct completely. More severe forms of plagiocephaly may require longer wearing times.
- To introduce your child to the helmet, start by placing it on your child for one to two hours at a time, two to three times a day. Gradually introduce sleep wearing by placing the helmet on your child during nap time.
- Check the forehead and scalp for irritation or areas that remain red for more than ten minutes after removing the helmet. If these red marks persist in the same area after each wearing an adjustment may be necessary by the orthotist.
- If the helmet persistently rotates or tips, small foam pads can be placed inside the helmet.
- In order to achieve the desired final result, the helmet must be worn for 23 hours per day as soon as the child is used to it. Most children can wear the helmet 23 hours per day after three or four days of “break in.” It is especially important to wear the C.A.P. during sleeping time.
- For the first week the skin should be re-evaluated every 5 to 6 hours to make sure no irritation occurs. If your child perspires excessively in the helmet, a thin knit skull cap may be worn under the helmet. If a rash develops, consult your pediatrician or pharmacist for topical medicines.
- Remove the C.A.P. for bathing and other water activities. If your child requires neck exercises for torticollis, the C.A.P. can be removed during exercise. Modifications at 8-10 week intervals may be necessary as the child grows. The orthotist will easily modify the size of the helmet as necessary.
- Parental attitude is very important for acceptance of the helmet. If the caregiver is apprehensive or cries, the child will sense this and become anxious.
